As far as the weight loss ... type 1 diabetics will usually lose a lot of weight right before diagnosis. It has nothing to do with their diet. What happens is that their body is producing little or no insulin. Insulin is the key that allows the sugar in a person's bloodstream to go into their cells. So without the insulin, they're eating carbs and just peeing them back out without any of them being absorbed. So of course that would cause rapid weight loss.
